Technology Description
Informatics competency in clinical nurses is crucial to providing safe patient care, improving quality, and reducing healthcare costs (Kleib et al., 2019). Assurance of informatics competency in a healthcare workforce with increasingly diverse educational preparations, demographics, and informatics skills has inherent significant challenges. Without an established baseline competency assessment, developing education and training programs that explicitly target individual needs is challenging. An extensive literature review revealed there are no nursing informatics assessment tools available that are relevant to bedside nurses.
NICAT 1.0 was developed based on the American Nurses Association’s Standards and Scope of Practice and Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform (2009) as an instrument to measure computer literacy, informatics literacy and informatics management skills. This tool (NiCAT 2.0) has been updated using pilot data and user feedback.
